HUNTSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team closed out its season-opening four-game road trip with a 69-45 victory over Sam Houston State University (SHSU) on Monday at Johnson Coliseum.
Senior
Shawnte' Goff led UTRGV (2-2) with 13 points, four assists and four steals. Junior
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir posted her first double-double of the season with 12 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore
Bernesha Peters scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
Tia Harston led SHSU (0-4) with 12 points and six rebounds.
Goff hit four early buckets, including a three, to help UTRGV jump out to a 16-4 lead.
UTRGV extended its lead to 28-11 on a Peters three and 37-14 on a three by sophomore
Idil Türk.
UTRGV took its largest lead of the game at 67-35 midway through the fourth quarter on a free throw by freshman
Megan Johnson.
UTRGV plays its home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Prairie View A&M as part of the Feast on the Border Tournament at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Marshall plays SHSU at 4:30. Doors open at 3:30.
