EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team won its home opener 82-74 over Prairie View A&M (PVAM) during the Feast on the Border Tournament on Friday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Mary Savoy led UTRGV (3-2) with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore
Nichele Hyman scored a career-high 16 points with four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore
Tristan Murphy scored a career-high 12 points with five rebounds and a career-high tying three blocks. Senior
Shawnte' Goff scored 12 points with four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Idil Türk scored 12 points with four rebounds.
Alexus Parker led PVAM (2-3) with 20 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
Tori Carter scored 18 points with four assists and three steals.
Jeronia Allen scored 15 points.
Dominique Newman scored 13 points with seven rebounds.
PVAM jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the first three minutes, but Goff, sophomore
Bernehsa Peters and Türk all hit three-pointers to power an 11-3 run that put UTRGV up 13-9.
PVAM came back to tie the game at 13 on a Carter layup and the game was still tied at 18 at the start of the second quarter before a pair of Goff layups fueled an 8-2 run to put UTRGV up 26-20 midway through the second.
UTRGV's lead stayed between three and six points until late in the third quarter when Parker drained a three to tie the game at 43.
Two minutes later, with the score tied at 45, Türk hit a jumper to spark an 11-2 run that put UTRGV up 56-47.
Carter responded with five points to power a 7-2 run that brought PVAM within 63-59 with 5:12 remaining, but Savoy scored seven points as part of a 13-3 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV wraps up the Feast on the Border Tournament against Sam Houston State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Marshall plays PVAM at 4:30. Doors open at 3:30.
