EL PASO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to UTEP 1-3 (25-21, 16-25, 12-25, 14-25) on Thursday at Memorial Gym.
Junior
Bojana Mitrovic led UTRGV (17-11) with 11 kills and five digs. Sophomore
Dubravka Vukoja recorded her second double-double with 19 assists and 18 digs.
Macey Austin led UTEP (5-19) with 11 kills.
Briana Arellano recorded 10 kills with seven digs.
UTEP got off to a strong start in the first set, scoring on eight of the first nine serves. Kills by Mitrovic and senior
Alisha Watson, however, helped UTRGV score the next seven points to tie the set. UTEP pushed its lead to 13-10 on a
Lindsey Larson kill, but a pair of kills by sophomore
Alexandra Ecker powered an 8-1 run that saw UTRGV go up 18-14. UTEP scored the next four to tie it, but UTRGV responded by scoring four of its own to go up 22-18. UTEP scored three-straight to pull within one, but a Mitrovic kill and a pair of blocks by freshman
Barbara Silva, first with Watson and then with Mitrovic, allowed UTRGV to close out the set.
The second set was tight early, as it was tied at 4, 5, and 6. It was still close when UTRGV pulled within 8-9 on a Watson kill, but an Arellano kill sparked a 12-5 run as UTEP pulled away to tie the match at 1.
UTRGV and UTEP were tied at 4 at the start of the third set after a Silva kill, but UTEP scored the next five as part of an 8-1 run to go up 12-5. Then, with UTRGV within 7-13 after an error, UTEP went on a 7-1 run to put the set away.
UTEP scored the first five points of the fourth set. UTRGV scored the next three to pull within two on an ace by sophomore
Ragni Steen Knudsen. Arellano responded with a kill, however, as UTEP went on a 7-2 run to go up 12-5. UTRGV pulled within 7-13 on a Watson kill and 11-17 on an error, but UTEP followed with a 6-1 run to push the set out of reach.
