EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to the University of Houston 68-52 on Wednesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Mary Savoy led UTRGV (4-3) with 10 points.
Angela Harris led Houston (2-4) with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc.
Chayanne Butler,
Dorian Branch and
Kierra Graves each scored 10 points.
UTRGV jumped out to a 7-2 lead on two layups and a three by senior
Shawnte' Goff.
UTRGV extended its lead to 10-4 on a three by sophomore
Idil Türk, but Houston responded with a 9-3 run to tie the game at 13.
UTRGV went up by three on a pair of threes by Weslaco alum
Angela Villarreal that made it 16-13 and 20-17 and a a layup by senior
Mary Savoy that made it 22-19, but Branch bookended a 13-5 run with a layup and a three to put Houston up 32-27 at halftime.
UTRGV pullled within three midway through the third quarter on a layup by sophomore
Tristan Murphy that made it 38-35 and a pair of Goff free throws that made it 40-37, but Houston hit 10 of its next 19 shots while holding UTRGV to 2-of-15 shooting to go on a 28-9 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 6 p.m. when it visits Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
