AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to No. 16 Texas 85-61 on Thursday at the Frank Erwin Center
 
Senior Shawnte' Goff led UTRGV (5-6) with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Sophomore Bernesha Peters finished with 12 points and three assists. Sophomore Idil Türk scored 11 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Junior Hidlur Björg Kjartansdóttir also hit three three-pointers en route to 10 points with four rebounds and two assists.
 
Joyner Holmes led Texas (4-4) with 16 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Brooke McCarty scored 14 points with five rebounds and six assists. Jada Underwood also scored 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Kelsey Lang scored 10 points with 10 rebounds.
 
UTRGV took its lone lead 33 seconds into the game when senior Mary Savoy hit a pair of free throws to make it 2-1. Texas followed by scoring the next eight points to take the lead, but UTRGV responded by hitting three-straight shots to pull within 11-10 on a Peters three with 7:03 remaining in the first quarter.
 
After a pair of Holmes layups helped Texas go up 17-10, UTRGV pulled within five on a Peters jumper and then again on a Goff jumper that made it 19-14.
 
UTRGV was still within single-figures after a Goff three made it 25-17 with 1:17 left in the quarter, but Texas outscored UTRGV 46-21 over the ensuing 20 minutes to take a 71-38 lead and push the game out of reach.
 
UTRGV kicks off a seven-game home stand on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Evangel in game that will be televised regionally on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. Fans that donate a new or lightly use coat will receive free general admission. Current UTRGV students, who already receive free general admission, will receive free popcorn. All coat donations benefit Tim's Coats. Doors open at 6.
