EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team is 9-6 through 15 games for the first time in program history after a 63-56 victory over the University of St. Thomas (UST) on Friday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
UTRGV is now one game ahead of last year's record-setting pace that saw the team finish with a program record .576 (19-14) winning percentage.
Senior
Mary Savoy led UTRGV with a career-high 28 points on 13-of-22 shooting, five rebounds and five steals. Sophomore
Idil Türk hit a career-high tying four three-pointers for the second game in a row, finishing with 12 points.
Maghen Lormand led UST with 16 points and six rebounds.
UST built an 11-2 lead over the first eight minutes of the game on the power of a three-point play, a three-pointer and another free throw by Lormand. UTRGV responded with 10-straight points to end the first quarter, including a jumper, a layup and a buzzer-beating three by sophomore
Nichele Hyman.
UST hit four of its first five shots to start the second quarter to retake the lead at 19-12.
UTRGV trailed 30-21 at the start of the third quarter, but Savoy hit five-straight layups to give UTRGV a one-point lead.
UST responded with an 8-2 run to take a 38-33 lead.
Then, with UST up 43-38, a pair of Savoy layups and a pair of three-pointers by Türk allowed UTRGV to score 13-straight points as part of a 20-4 run to give UTRGV a lead that it never relinquished.
UTRGV is back in action on Monday at 7 p.m. when it closes out non-conference play against Texas Lutheran in a game that will be televised regionally on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. It's the final city night of the season, as residents of Alton, Edinburg, Granjeno, Hidalgo, McAllen, Mission, and Palmhurst will be able to purchase general admission tickets by $2 each with proof of residency. Doors open at 6.
