EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team hit a season-high tying 11 three-pointers to beat the Seattle University Redhawks 67-57 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Shaquille Hines led three Vaqueros (7-19, 3-8 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including a career-high tying 5-of-7 from behind the arc, with six rebounds. The effort propelled Hines past former teammates
Brandon Provost (1,252 points, 2010-13) and
Aaron Urbanus (1,259 points, 2009-13) for 11
th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,272 points. Additionally, Hines' first rebound was the 600
th of his career. Sophomore
Dan Kimasa posted his team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Ot Elmore scored a career-high 11 points while hitting a career-high three three-pointers and dishing out a career-high six assists.
Jack Crook led the Redhawks (12-13, 6-5 WAC) with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds.
Brendan Westendorf scored 14 points with a game-high four steals.
William Powell scored 10 points with 13 rebounds.
The Redhawks jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the first five minutes, holding the Vaqueros 1-of-7 from the field, including 0-for-4 from behind the arc.
The Redhawks pushed their lead out to 15-5 with 13:01 remaining in the first half, but the Vaqueros scored eight-straight points as part of a 30-9 run to go up 32-22 on a Hines three late in the half.
Hines scored 13 of his 18 first half points during the run as the Vaqueros went 11-for-14 from the field, including 6-for-8 from behind the arc, while forcing seven turnovers and holding the Redhawks to 3-of-12 shooting, including 0-of-5 from behind the arc.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead out to 14 early in the second half on a Hines layup that made it 46-32.
Crook responded with nine points as the Redhawks went on a 15-4 run to pull within 50-47 with 5:00 remaining.
The Redhawks were still within three at 53-50 with 2:22 to go, but Elmore hit back-to-back threes to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host CSU Bakersfield for homecoming in a game that will be televised lived throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel Alternate (825).
