BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 80-66 on Saturday at the Icardo Center.
Freshman
Bernesha Peters led three Vaqueros (15-12, 7-5 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 16 points and five rebounds. Junior
Anushka Maldonado scored 15 points with five rebounds and a career-high tying three blocks. Freshman
Nichelle Hyman scored 10 points with five rebounds.
Erika Williams led the Roadrunners (9-18, 6-6 WAC) with 25 points while hitting seven three-pointers.
Batabe Zempare scored 17 points with 12 rebounds.
Alyssa Shannon scored 13 points with five rebounds and seven assists.
The Roadrunners jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but a Maldonado layup and a jumper by sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir allowed the Vaqueros to pull within two before the Roadunners went on an 11-4 run to go up 19-10.
The Roadrunners pushed their lead out to 34-21 on a Williams three with 3:59 remaining in the second quarter, but Maldonado hit a pair of three-pointers to power a 12-3 run that brought the Vaqueros within 37-33 at halftime.
Dajay Vines opened the third quarter with a jumper and then Williams hit a three to make it 42-33. Senior
Rickell Preston and Peters hit baskets around a Zempare layup to make it 44-37, but the Roadrunners responded with a 19-3 run to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Chicago State for senior day at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in a game that will be televised lived throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel Alternate (825). Doors open at 6.
