ABILENE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team scored three runs in the ninth and got the tying run to third base before falling to the Abilene Christian University Wildcats 6-5 on Sunday at Crutcher Scott Field.

Brandon Lambright came in and freshman
Caden Rosholt greeted him with a single through the right side to load the bases. Junior
Joseph Collazo then hit a single to bring in a run and leave the bases loaded. Freshman
Anthony Gomez and senior
Cole Loncar followed with RBI-groundouts to make it a one-run game and move Rosholt to third, but senior
Scott Mercer flied out to center to end the game.
Rosholt finished 2-for-4 while Mercer went 2-for-5. Mercer also had a run-scoring single to make it 6-2 in the eighth.
Senior
Cole Loncar hit his first home run to give the Vaqueros (0-4) their first lead at 1-0 in the fourth. He finished 1-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman
Pablo Ortiz (0-1) got off to a strong start, allowing just an infield-single over the first three innings. In the fourth, however,
Hunter Markwardt drew a leadoff four-pitch walk and stole second before scoring on a single by
Braxton Wilks. After a passed ball and another hit,
Dalton DeVries singled to make it 2-1.
In the fifth,
Aaron Draper drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a steal and home on a balk. Senior
Matt Rigby came on in relief with one on and two out and gave up a Wilks double and a
David Ruot single to score runs before an error allowed another run to score to make it 6-1.
Wilks finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Drew Hanson (1-0) started for the Wildcats (4-0), striking out six over six innings of three-hit ball.
The Vaqueros open up the Al Ogletree Classic on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they play host to Washington State at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, formerly known as Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 6.
