EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Houston Baptist University Huskies 6-2 during day three of the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Huskies (4-3) starter
Addison Russ (2-0) carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but junior Edinburg alum
Edgar Cordon came up with a pinch-hit single leading off the frame. Freshman
Isaac Gonzalez, sophomore
Manny Loredo and freshman
Caden Rosholt followed with singles to drive in the first Vaqueros (2-5) run and knock out Russ.
Matt Harding came in and got junior
Joseph Collazo to ground into a double play that drove-in Gonzalez to complete the scoring.
The Huskies jumped on sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Ryan Jackson (0-2) right away, starting the game with three-straight hits, including an RBI-single by
Brandon Brintz to make it 1-0.
Then, in the fourth,
Justin Monsour and
Joe Van Marter reached on two-out errors, setting up an RBI-double by
Greg Espinosa and a two-run single by Brintz to make it 4-0.
The Huskies tacked on two more in the sixth when Monsour hit a sacrifice fly and Van Marter hit an RBI-single.
Van Marter finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
The Vaqueros conclude the Al Ogletree Classic on Sunday at 4 p.m. when they play host to Prairie View A&M. It's the second game of a doubleheader, as Washington State faces Houston Baptist at 12. Gates open at 11 a.m.
