OREM, Utah – Freshman
Bernesha Peters scored a career-high 26 points, but the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 71-57 on Thursday at the UVU PE Building.
Peters went a career-high 9-for-19 shooting from the field, including 4-for-11 from behind the arc, plus a career-high tying 4-for-5 from the line with two assists and one steal. Sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir posted her third double-double of the season for the Vaqueros (13-10, 5-3 WAC, finishing with 14 points on 7-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds.
Sam Loggins and
Mariah Seals led five Wolverines (11-12, 4-4 WAC) in double-figures with 14 points and five rebounds each. Loggins also had three blocks while Seals had three steals.
Deijah Blanks scored 12 points with six rebounds.
Rebecca MaWhinney scored 11 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Georgia Agnew scored 10 points with nine rebounds and six assists.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the opening minutes. Midway through the quarter, however, junior
Lile Havili hit a pair of free throws and Peters and Kjartansdóttir made layups to make it a four-point game.
The Vaqueros were still within four at 12-8 with two minutes left in the first, but the Wolverines scored the next six points to push their lead out to 18-8.
A Kjartansdóttir jumper brought the Vaqueros within 22-16 with 7:27 remaining in the second, but
Karlee Norris hit three layups to fuel a 12-4 run as the Wolverines took their largest lead of the half at 34-20.
The Vaqueros trailed by as many as 13 in the third quarter at 45-32 after a Seals three, but responded with an 8-0 run to pull within five on a Kjartansdóttir layup late in the quarter.
Then, with the Vaqueros down 49-42 early in the fourth, Peters his back-to-back threes to make it a one-point game, but the Wolverines scored the next 11 points to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. when they visit Grand Canyon.
