EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team returns home to host the Lamar University Cardinals on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Attendance is free and fans are encouraged to attend. Gates open at 11 a.m.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros (3-3) are coming off of a sweep over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Friday in a neutral site match in College Station, in the second match of the day.
The Vaqueros swept through doubles and then didn't drop a set in singles.
In their first match of the day, UTRGV fell 2-5 to the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies. Juan Cruz Soris picked up a win at No.1 singles while
Elliot Johnstone also picked up a win at No. 6 singles.
Scouting the CardinalsThe Cardinals are 2-2 on the season and last played on January 31 when they defeated the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 4-3 on the road.
Their first win of the season came against Louisiana-Lafayette back on January 16 on the road. All four matches for the Cardinals this season have come on the road.
The Cardinals return seven from last year's squad. Seniors Trey Crysel and Steven McMullan lead the returners that also include Michael Feucht, Jeandre Hoogenboezem, Juuso Laitinen, Nikita Lis and Benny Schweizer.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 38-29-3 all-time against the Cardinals in a series that dates back to 1958. Both teams were scheduled to face each other last season but the match was cancelled due to weather.
The last time the Vaqueros and Cardinals faced each other in the spring dual match season was back on February 14, 2014 when the Vaqueros fell 4-3 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
These two teams have seen plenty of each other after also facing off against each other in the fall at the Ron Brooks Invitational.
GlobetrottersThe Vaqueros currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Israel and Argentina.
Next UpThe Vaqueros will return to action on February 20 when they head to San Antonio to face the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals and the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints in a doubleheader.
