FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the No. 7 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 13-0 in seven innings on Tuesday at Lupton Field.
The Horned Frogs (7-1) jumped on junior
Austin Kufrovich (0-1) right away, as after a leadoff walk,
Cam Warner hit a two-run home run over the centerfield wall.
The Horned Frogs then erupted for seven runs on two hits, six walks, and three errors in the third. Warner started the inning with an infield-single and later scored on an error. Three-straight walks loaded the bases for
Elliot Barzilli, who tripled off the top of the left-center field wall and scored on an error. Four batters later, with runners at second and third and two outs,
Ryan Merrill stole home. The next two batters walked to load the bases, and then
Luken Baker walked to force-in a run.
The Horned Frogs added four runs (two earned) in the fifth on a two-run single by Baker, an error, and an RBI-infield single by
Trent Franson.
The Vaqueros (3-6) had their best chance to score in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with nobody out on walks to seniors
Cole Loncar and
Scott Mercer and a single by senior
Correy Davis, but junior
Austin Oakes struck out, freshman
Caden Rosholt hit a screaming liner into the glove of the pitcher, and then junior
Austin Douglas struck out.
Dalton Horton (1-0) pitched four innings of three-hit ball for the Horned Frogs, striking out two and walking two.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Friday at 6 p.m. when they open up a three-game series at Lamar.
