LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the third-seeded Seattle U Redhawks 75-52 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday at Orleans Arena.
Sophomore
Dan Kimasa led the Vaqueros (8-22) with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 shooting from the line plus nine rebounds.
Brendan Westendorf led the Redhawks (14-15) with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Jadon Cohee scored 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
William Powell scored 11 points with nine rebounds.
Kimasa hit three early layups and a pair of free throws to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 14-6 lead over the first eight and a half minutes.
The Vaqueros still led by eight at 16-8 after a layup by senior
Everett Osborne with 10:56 remaining in the first half, but a Powell three-point play sparked a 9-0 run to give the Redhawks a 17-16 lead.
The Vaqueros and Redhawks traded baskets over the next few minutes, before the Vaqueros went up 28-24 on a three by senior
Shaquille Hines with 2:24 to go, but the Redhawks closed the half on a 10-2 run to go up 34-30.
The Redhawks pushed their lead to 36-30 on a
Manny Chibuogwu jumper at the start of the second half, and then 41-34 on a Powell free throw two and a half minutes later.
The Vaqueros pulled within four on a three by freshman
Antonio Green, but a Chibuogwu layup, three free throws by Cohee, and a three by
Jake Spurgeon gave the Redhawks a 49-37 lead.
The Vaqueros climbed to within eight at 52-44 on an Osborne jumper at the 9:57 mark, but the Redhawks responded with a 21-5 run to push the game out of reach.
