Men's Tennis Starts Spring Break Road Trip Saturday Against No. 33 Rice

HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team kicks off their spring break trip, as they visit the No. 33 Rice Owls on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
 
It will be the first of four matches in six days for the Vaqueros as they face Nicholls State, New Orleans and Lipscomb next week.
 
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros (7-7) closed out the H-E-B Tournament of Champions with a 0-4 loss to South Alabama as they finished the tournament in sixth place.
 
Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen won in their doubles match but the Jaguars picked up the doubles point.
 
South Alabama swept through singles to clinch the match.
 
Scouting the Owls
The Owls are ranked No. 33 in the ITA Tennis Rankings with a 12-4 record on the season. They are 11-1 at home and are set to host New Orleans prior to facing the Vaqueros.
 
David Warren leads Rice with an 11-2 singles record in the dual match season. No one else has double digit wins.
 
In doubles, the team of Jake Hansen and Emanuel Llamas lead the Owls with an 11-4 record while mainly playing at the No. 3 spot.
 
The All-Time Series
The Vaqueros are 17-24 all-time against the Owls in a series that dates back to 1960. These two teams faced off last season and it was the Owls who came away with the 6-0 victory.
 
Globetrotters
The Vaqueros currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Israel and Argentina.
 
Next Up
The Vaqueros will next travel to Louisiana to face Nicholls State on Monday March 14 at 2 p.m.
