FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 97-73 in the first round of the WNIT on Thursday at Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena.
The Vaqueros (19-14) finish the season with the highest single-season winning percentage in program history (.576).
Freshman
Bernesha Peters led the Vaqueros with 15 points and six rebounds. Junior
Shawnte' Goff scored 14 points while hitting four three-pointers. Senior
Rickell Preston scored 13 points with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior
Anushka Maldonado scored 12 points with four rebounds.
Zahna Medley led the Horned Frogs (17-14) 21 points while hitting five three-pointers.
AJ Alix scored 20 points with nine assists.
Torre Thompson scored 15 points.
Veja Hamilton scored 15 points.
Jordan Moore scored 14 points.
The Vaqueros led 8-6 seven minutes into the game on the power of a pair of three-pointers by Goff and a layup by sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir.
Torre Thompson and Alix responded with three-pointers to give the Horned Frogs the lead and kick off a 15-2 run to end the first quarter and go up 21-10.
Thompson opened the second quarter with a layup to push the lead to 13, but Peters and Goff used three-pointers to bring the Vaqueros within 25-16.
The Horned Frogs, however, scored the next nine points to build a 34-16 lead on a Medley three.
Up 49-32 at the start of the third quarter, the Horned Frogs hit 10 of their first 12 shots, including a pair of threes, to extend their lead to 73-48 and push the game out of reach.
