Baseball Walks Off Against Texas State in the 10th

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th to beat the Texas State University Bobcats, a team receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 25 poll, 4-3 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

With the Vaqueros (10-10) down 3-2 entering the inning, junior Jose Garcia reached on an infield-single and moved to second on a balk. Senior Cole Loncar followed with an infield-single to put runners on the corners. Chase Hodson (3-1) responded by striking out junior Joseph Collazo, but sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Manny Loredo lifted a game-tying sacrifice fly to centerfield. During the next at-bat, Loncar stole second. Senior Scott Mercer then hit a grounder to short, but Luke Sherley's throw to first was in the dirt and Nick Perez couldn't scoop it, allowing Loncar to score to end the game.

The Vaqueros led 2-0 until the bottom of the ninth, when Jaylen Hubbard and Jonathan Ortega came up with one-out singles against sophomore Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson (2-3). An error allowed Ortega to advance to second, so after Dylan Paul grounded out to score Hubbard, Granger Studdard was able to hit a game-tying single to force extra innings.

The Bobcats (15-6) took the lead in the 10th on a two-out double by Perez.

The Vaqueros led early in the game, going up 1-0 on an error in the first and 2-0 on an RBI-single by sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. in the fourth.

Sophomore Robert Quinonez pitched the first 6.1 innings, striking out six while scattering six hits and three walks. He threw 72 of his 115 (62.6 percent) pitches for strikes.

Senior Parker Gallegos retired both batters he faced before sophomore George Lamb pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Vaqueros open up Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday at 2 p.m. when they play the first game of a three-game series at Northern Colorado.
