CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team regrouped to pick up a 4-2 win over the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners in their second match of the 50^th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Friday at the H-E-B Tennis Courts.
 
"It was a huge team effort from all the guys today," Vaqueros head coach Brett Bernstein said. "We have kept talking about the one match were we were all going to have to play some serious tennis in order to win and it happened today."
 
The Vaqueros (7-6) and the Roadrunners (1-11) skipped doubles competition and jumped right into singles where it came down to the last court. UTRGV picked up a victory on court one as Juan Cruz Soria defeated Diogo Casa 6-3, 6-2.
 
Ethan Ammon notched another victory for the Vaqueros after beating Christian Carillo 6-1, 6-3 on court two. Koby Jansen also picked up win for UTRGV after defeating Fabian Brand 6-2, 6-0 on court three but the Roadrunners got their points with wins on court three and five.
 
On court six, the Roadrunners had a chance to tie the match but Andres Hernandez would deny them the opportunity with his first collegiate career victory as he picked up a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 win over Ricardo Gonzalez.
 
"Freshman Andres Hernandez in his first match of the year got the call to fill the slot at line six," Bernstein said. "He came up with the clinching win in a touch three-match set. I could not be more proud of him."
 
The Vaqueros will face the winner of DePaul and South Alabama on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the H-E-B Tennis Courts.
