BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team won the middle game of a three-game series with the Lamar University Cardinals 7-3 on Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Junior
Jose Garcia led the Vaqueros (4-7) offensively by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Austin Oakes went 2-for-5 with a double, a career-high three RBI and a run scored. All three RBI came in the eighth when, with the game tied at 2, Oakes hit a bases-clearing double to put the Vaqueros on top. One batter later, Oakes scored on a sacrifice fly by senior
Correy Davis to make it 6-2.
That made a winner of junior
Andrew Garcia (1-1), who pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits (eight singles) while striking out four. He threw 82 of his 121 (67.8 percent) pitches for strikes.
The Vaqueros took their first lead right away, as after junior
Joseph Collazo was plunked to start the first, Garcia doubled and senior
Cole Loncar came up with an RBI-single to make it 1-0.
The Cardinals (8-4) responded in the second when
Robin Adames reached on a two-out error, leading to a single by
Reid Russell and an RBI-single by
Ryan Erickson to tie the game.
The Cardinals took the lead in the third on a one-out double by
Bryndan Arrendondo that made it 2-1.
In the mean time,
Jayson McKinley retired 13-straight Vaqueros and 14 of 15, but Collazo led off the sixth by reaching on an error and Garcia doubled to left-center to tie the game at 2.
McKinley lasted six innings, scattering four hits while striking out four.
Fernando Martinez (1-2) took over and pitched a scoreless seventh, but walked Collazo to lead off the eighth.
Enrique Oqunedo came in and plunked Garcia and walked Loncar, setting up Oakes' double.
The Vaqueros added a run in the ninth when Loncar grounded into a double play with runners on the corners and nobody out.
The Cardinals got the run back with two outs in the ninth on a
Chaneng Valera double.
The Vaqueros and Cardinals play then rubber game of this series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
