AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the University of Texas Longhorns 7-5 on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Two Vaqueros (17-15) had multi-hit games, as senior
Cole Loncar went 2-for-4 with a run scored and senior
Scott Mercer finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
The Vaqueros stranded four base runners over the first two innings, but with the bases loaded and two outs in the second, junior
Victor Garcia Jr. hit a two-run single and senior
Jacob Huckabay hit an RBI-single to make it 3-0.
After a
Kody Clemens RBI-double brought the Longhorns within two, senior
Correy Davis drove-in a run with a groundout to make it 4-1 in the fourth.
The Longhorns (17-20), however, scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a
Brett Boswell RBI-triple followed by a wild pitch, and then twice in the fifth thanks in part to a pair of passed balls and a wild pitch by junior
Eddie Delgado (1-2) to take a 5-4 lead.
The Longhorns added another run in the sixth on a
Travis Jones suicide squeeze, but Davis gave that Vaqueros that run back in the seventh with a no-doubt solo home run over the left field bullpen that made it 6-5.
Clemens responded with a solo shot to right in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Beau Ridgeway (2-0) picked up the win after pitching two hitless innings across the fifth and sixth. Prior to his appearance, the Vaqueros had had 13 base runners against
Connor Mayes and
Blake Wellmann.
Chase Shugart pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
Boswell and Clemens each had multi-hit games, with Boswell finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Clemens finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
