Baseball Drops Series Finale to New Mexico State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 7-3 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in the final game of a three-game series.

Junior Joseph Collazo led the Vaqueros (11-13, 1-2 WAC) offensively by going 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Collazo is hitting .412 (21-for-51) during the streak.

Collazo's first hit drove-in a run in the first. Junior Jose Garcia led off the inning with a four-pitch walk against Marcel Renteria (2-2). After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Garcia took off for third as Collazo fouled off the pitch. That forced second baseman Brent Sakurai to hold on Garcia, creating a hole on the right side of the infield that Collazo exploited to make it 1-0.

The Vaqueros added two more runs in the second on a two-out single by sophomore Isaac Gonzalez that made it 3-0.

After giving up a single to start the game, junior Eddie Delgado (0-1) retired the next nine batters he faced. In the fourth, however, Greg Popylisen hit a slow chopper to the left side of the infield for a base hit. After Popylisen stole second, Austin Bottello came up with an RBI-single. One out later, Joseph Koerper reached on an infield-single to set-up a game-tying double by L.J. Hatch.

The Aggies (17-11, 5-1 WAC) came up with four-straight hits to start the fifth, including a two-run double by Popylisen and an RBI-single by Botello. One out later, Koeper singled home another run to complete the scoring.

The Vaqueros bullpen took over from there, with sophomores George Lamb and Robert Quinonez combining on 4.1 hitless innings, striking out six while walking two.

The Vaqueros close out this four-game home stand on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Incarnate Word in a game that will be broadcast live throughout Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323). It's $2 Tuesday. All concession items and general admission tickets will be $2 or less. Gates open at 5:30.
