KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team improved to 2-2 in Western Athletic Conference play after defeating the Chicago State Cougars 6-1 on Friday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
 
The Vaqueros (11-12, 2-2 WAC) got the lead on the Cougars (2-17, 0-3 WAC) after picking up the doubles point. The team of sophomore Elliot Johnstone and freshman Andres Hernandez picked up the 7-6 victory over Rohan Wattley and Felix Savard on court two.
 
The Cougars won on court one but the Vaqueros won on court three after Chicago State was short a player.
 
In singles, the Vaqueros picked up another point with a default win on court six but they remained in control throughout the match. Junior Juan Cruz Soria defeated Savard 6-1, 6-3 on court one to improve to 14-5 in singles this season and 3-1 in the WAC.
 
Sophomore Koby Jansen beat Christian Gonzalez 6-1, 6-3 on court three to extend the Vaqueros' lead. Sophomore Elliot Johnstone added another point on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Wattley on court four and freshman Yehonatan Kaufman defeated Gonzalo Martinez 6-3, 6-2 on court five.
 
The Cougars got their lone point on court two.
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Saturday as they close out the regular season against Missouri-Kansas City at 11 a.m.
