CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team completed the doubleheader sweep of the Chicago State University Cougars with a 9-2 victory in game two on Saturday at Cougar Stadium.
Sophomore
Robert Quinonez (1-0) pitched a season-high eight innings, striking out six while allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks.
The Vaqueros (14-14, 3-3 WAC) scored early and often against Cougars (7-23, 1-8 WAC) starter
Dillon Engle (1-7), with three runs in the first, one in the second and three in the fourth.
Senior
Correy Davis came up with a two-run double and scored on an error in the first.
Junior
Jose Garcia belted RBI-doubles in the second and the fourth. Later in the fourth, senior
Scott Mercer hit an RBI-single and junior
Joseph Collazo reached on an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 7-1.
The Vaqueros added runs in the seventh on an RBI-double by junior
Jacob Huckabay and the ninth on a wild pitch.
Three Vaqueros had multi-hit games, including Garcia, who finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored, Mercer, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, junior
Austin Oakes, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Huckabay, who finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host North Dakota for the start of a three-game series on Pride in the Park Night at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The game will be broadcast live throughout Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323). Gates open at 6.
