EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 5-0 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The Vaqueros (19-24, 8-10 WAC) were held to three hits by
AJ Monarrez (4-5), a bunt single by junior
Jose Garcia in the first, a single by senior
Scott Mercer in the second, and a double by junior
Joseph Collazo in the seventh.
Monarrez pitched a complete game shutout, striking out nine and walking two while inducing 13 groundouts.
Sophomore
Andrew Garcia (6-5) pitched well for the Vaqueros, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four in seven innings.
The Roadrunners (11-34, 6-14 WAC) scratched across a run in the second on a two-out error, and then doubled their lead in the seventh on a two-out single by
David Metzgar.
The Roadrunners added three more two-out runs in the eighth on a wild pitch and a two-run double by
Mahlik Jones.
The Vaqueros head out on their final road trip of the regular season when they open up a three-game series at Utah Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.
