Volleyball Pulls Off Comeback Against Abilene Christian

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team won three-straight sets to open the Owls Classic with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-21, 15-3) victory over Abilene Christian University (ACU) on Friday at FAU Arena.

Sophomore Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (7-4) with her ninth double-double in 11 matches by coming up with a career-high 24 kills on .279 hitting, 11 digs and three blocks. Freshman Barbara Silva recorded 16 kills on .414 hitting and four blocks. Senior Alisha Watson finished with 12 kills and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and third in a row.

Jacey Smith led ACU (1-12) with 13 kills. Lauren Walker recorded 11 kills on .370 hitting with four blocks. Corinne Grandcolas finished with 10 kills and three blocks. Marybeth Sandercox also recorded 10 kills.

After dropping the first two sets, UTRGV trailed the third set 21-23, but Silva came up with a kill, and then after an attack error tied the set, a Knudsen kill made it set point. Sophomore Barbara Thais Krug followed with an ace to end the set.

The fourth set was tight most of the way, but with the score tied at 16, Knudsen came up with a kill and an ace to spark a 7-2 run and make it 23-18. ACU scored the next two, but UTRGV scored two of the final three points to end the set.

UTRGV scored the first eight points of the fifth set thanks in-part to a pair of Knudsen kills, a Watson kill and an Ecker kill to run away with the set and win the match.

UTRGV jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but ACU came back to take a 15-12 led on a Smith kill. Three Watson kills and two aces by sophomore Alexandra Ecker gave UTRGV a 17-15 lead. UTRGV still led at 20-18 after an attack error, but ACU scored the next five points to come back and take the set.

The first half of the second set was tight, but down 10-12, UTRGV went on a 7-0 run to open a five-point lead on a Knudsen kill. UTRGV held the lead until set point, going up 24-23 and 25-24 on Knudsen kills, but after an attack error, Lexi Mercier and Kendall Bosse came up with kills to give ACU a 2-0 lead.

UTRGV continues the tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Florida Gulf Coast before facing host Florida Atlantic at 1:30.
