EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team won its WAC opener over Utah Valley University (UVU) 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a boisterous crowd of 1,188.

Junior Bojana Mitrovic led UTRGV (10-5, 1-0 WAC) with 17 kills, 16 digs and four blocks for her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Ragni Steen Knudsen recorded her 11th double-double with 15 kills, 15 digs and three aces. Senior Alisha Watson posted 12 kills on .435 hitting with a season-high five aces, four digs and four blocks. Watson moved from tied for sixth into fourth place in program history in career aces, now with 109. She is six away from third place, currently held by Jaclyn Muszynski (2000-03).

Madison Dennison led UVU (4-10, 0-1 WAC) with 12 kills and six blocks. Alexis Davies recorded 12 kills with nine digs and six blocks. Lexi Thompson had 11 kills. Izzie Hinton finished with 10 kills, seven digs and five blocks.

UVU led for most of the first half of the first set, but after going up 10-9, sophomore Alexandra Ecker and Watson came up with kills to spark a 7-1 run to put UTRGV up 16-11. UVU scored seven of the next nine to tie it at 18, but UTRGV scored the next four, including back-to-back Mitrovic kills, to take a 22-18 lead. UVU came back to tie it before reaching set point at 25-24, but UTRGV scored the final two points to take the set.

UVU took the early lead in the second set as well, but after going up 8-6, a block by Watson and freshman Barbara Silva was the first of three-straight points to put UTRGV up 9-8. UTRGV still led at 10-9, but Hinton kills bookended a 4-0 run to give UVU the lead. UVU extended its lead to 15-13, but after a timeout, Watson used five kills and two aces to power a 12-3 run to end the set.

After UVU took the third set, UTRGV jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth set. UVU came back to take a 12-11 lead, but UTRGV used a pair of Knudsen kills and an error to go up 14-12. UVU scored the next five points to go up 17-14 and still led at 19-17, but Watson recorded a kill and two aces to give UTRGV a 20-19 lead. Then, with the score tied at 23, sophomore Dubravka Vukoja dumped a ball with her back to the net and Knudsen buried an attack to end the match.

UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. when it hosts Seattle U. Doors open at 11 a.m.
