CHICAGO Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team closed out a three-game road swing with a 57-46 victory over Chicago State University (CSU) on Saturday at Jones Convocation Center.
Senior
Shawnte' Goff led UTRGV (13-8, 3-2 WAC) with 18 points and four assists. Junior
Hildur Björg Kjarstandóttir scored 13 points with eight rebounds and two blocks. Senior
Mary Savoy posted her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Jessica Cerda led CSU (0-19, 0-5 WAC) with 17 points and five rebounds.
Kaylee Allen scored 13 points with 12 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.
CSU was in control early, going up 19-8 at the end of a 10-0 early in the second quarter. CSU still had a double-figures lead at 22-12, but Savoy hit a pair of layups while Goff made two jumpers to bring UTRGV within 22-20.
UTRGV took the lead for the first time with a 9-0 run from the end of the second quarter through the start of the third quarter. Freshman
Megan Johnson made a jumper to make it 27-26 and then Kjartansdóttir followed with a jumper to make it a three-point game.
Cerda tied the game with a three, but freshman
Nichele Hyman made two baskets as UTRGV responded with a 12-4 run to go up 41-33.
CSU hit its next three shots to pull within 43-42 on an Allen three-point play early in the fourth quarter.
CSU was still within one at 45-44 with 5:10 remaining before Goff hit two layups, a free throw and a three-pointer to power a game-ending 12-2 run.
In total, UTRGV outscored CSU 45-24 over the final 24:50 of the game.
UTRGV returns home on Thursday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Utah Valley in a game that will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports channel 323. Doors open at 6.
