PRAIRIE VIEW – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team recorded their first win of the season after defeating Prairie View A&M 5-2 on Saturday at the PVAMU Tennis Courts on Saturday.
 
"I am proud of the guys for digging deep and pulling out this match," UTRGV head coach Dann Nelson said. "We played with a lot of intensity in both singles and doubles."
 
UTRGV (1-3) got things started in doubles as the team of junior Koby Jansen and sophomore Rodrigo Del Pozo picked up their first doubles victory of the season after defeating Freddy Quintero and Zachary Suico 6-3 on court three. Junior Elliot Johnstone and freshman Clément Sarradin clinched the doubles point with the 6-3 win on court one over Sergio Avella and Anirudh Yadav.
 
In singles, UTRGV quickly added to their lead after Sarradin made quick work of Ulrick Boyogueno 6-1, 6-0 on court four. Jansen, in his first action since last April, made his presence felt again as he recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Quintero on court five.
 
Johnstone clinched the match for UTRGV with a hard fought win on court one as he defeated Avella 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 on court one. Prairie View A&M (0-4) got their two points on courts three and six but it was freshman Mateo Schmit who closed out the scoring with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yadav on court two.
 
UTRGV will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to San Antonio to face the University of Texas at San Antonio at 10 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
