EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to Seattle U 67-54 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Senior
Shawnte' Goff led UTRGV (14-9, 4-3 WAC) with 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Sophomore
Bernesha Peters finished with 10 points.
Alexis Montgomery led Seattle U (8-13, 5-1 WAC) with 20 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.
Jacinta Beckley scored 18 points with seven rebounds and two steals.
Kaylee Best scored 12 points with seven rebounds.
Goff hit three of her first six shots, including a pair of three-pointers, to help UTRGV jump out to a 17-4 lead over the opening seven and a half minutes.
UTRGV pushed its lead to 21-7 early in the second quarter on four Goff free throws. Seattle U scored the next six points to pull within eight before a jumper by Weslaco alum
Laura Van Tilburg and two Goff free throws put UTRGV up 25-13.
UTRGV took its largest lead of the half in the final minute on a layup by Peters that made it 36-20.
Ashlyn Lewey hit a layup to end the quarter and start an 18-2 run as Seattle U tied the game at 38 on a Beckley layup with 1:33 remaining in the third.
Seattle U took the lead for the first time on a Montgomery three that made it 45-43 at the start of the fourth. Two minutes later, with the game tied at 47, Best nailed back-to-back three-pointers and
Wilma Afunugo made a layup to give Seattle U the lead for good.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it visits UMKC.
