SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team fell 1-6 to the University of Texas at San Antonio on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center to close out their weekend of competition.
 
UTRGV (1-4) opened doubles with a win as junior Elliot Johnstone and freshman Clément Sarradin defeated Kai Breitbach and Axel Cronje 6-4 on court one but UTSA won on courts two and three to take the doubles point.
 
UTSA then opened up singles with wins on courts four and three before junior Koby Jansen got UTRGV on the board by defeating Leon Hein 6-3, 6-1 on court five. It was back-to-back singles victories for Jansen on the weekend.
 
Sophomore Rodrigo Del Pozo opened with a 6-4 first set win against Christian Carrillo on court six before dropping the second and third sets allowing UTSA to clinch the match.
 
Johnstone and freshman Mateo Schmit showed some grit on courts one and two for UTRGV. After dropping to the opening set 3-6 to Juri Reckow, Schmit followed with a 7-5 win in the second set and then forced the tiebreaker in the third set before falling 6-7.
 
Johnstone opened his match with Breitbach with a 6-3 win in the first set and then extended the second set before falling 5-7 and 3-6 in the third.
 
UTRGV will kick off their home portion of their schedule on Wednesday when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union following the conclusion of the women's match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
