EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team opens their home portion of their schedule on Wednesday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend. The men's and women's teams will both play their matches at the same time with each match using three courts.
Last Time Out
UTRGV's (1-4) dropped a hard fought match against the University of Texas San Antonio 1-6 as three of the six singles matches went to three sets.
Elliot Johnstone and Clément Sarradin got doubles started with a 6-4 win on court one but UTSA picked up the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
In singles,
Koby Jansen got the lone point for UTRGV after defeating Leon Hein 6-3, 6-1 on court five. Johnstone,
Mateo Schmit and
Rodrigo Del Pozo saw their singles matches go to three sets.
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will kick off their 2017 season today against Prairie View A&M before making their trip to the Rio Grande Valley.
The Islanders return five from last year's squad including four seniors in Kevin Bettendroffer, Mitchell Cook, Paul Cook and Max Ilic.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has 10 Southland Conference Championships and has eight NCAA appearances. They have also have been ranked in 10 straight seasons.
South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union
UTRGV currently leads the Showdown 17-15 after back-to-back wins by women's basketball.
The tennis matches will be the first Showdown events of the spring and will count for two points each.

The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 13-39 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 1961.
These two teams faced off last season and it was the Islanders who came away with the 6-1 victory in Corpus Christi.
The last time UTRGV defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came on March 10, 2010 when they picked up the 4-3 win in Corpus Christi.
Next Up
UTRGV will have some time off before they hit the road once again as they travel to St. Edward's University on February 11.
