SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team's seven-match winning streak came to a close with a 2-3 (25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 20-25, 12-15) loss to Seattle U on Saturday at the Connolly Complex.
Junior
Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (10-8, 4-1 WAC) with 17 kills on .308 hitting. Senior
Bojana Mitrovic posted her sixth double-double with 11 kills, a season-high 16 digs and four blocks. Freshman
Veronika Jandova recorded a career-high 11 kills on .400 hitting with six blocks. Sophomore
Barbara Silva also finished with 11 kills. Junior
Alexandra Ecker recorded nine kills on .333 hitting. Junior
Dubravka Vukoja dished out 47 assists with 10 digs for her third double-double.
Katarina Marinkovic led Seattle U (6-12, 2-3 WAC) with 14 kills, 12 digs and six blocks.
Katarina Glavinic finished with 13 kills on .323 hitting and four blocks.
Maja Stojanovic recorded 10 kills on .400 hitting and five blocks.
The first set was tight early, as a Marinkovic kill tied the score at 10. A block by Jandova and Mitrovic allowed UTRGV to go up 12-10, and then after another Marinkovic kill, UTRGV went on an 11-3 run capped by an Ecker kill to go up 23-14 and pull away for a 1-0 lead in the match.
After dropping the second set, UTRGV fell behind 4-6 at the outset of set three. Knudsen responded with four kills to help UTRGV go on a 12-3 run to take a 16-9 lead. Seattle U won the next three serves to pull within four, but Knudsen pushed back with another kill. Seattle U was again within four at 16-20 when a Mitrovic kill sparked a 5-0 run to end the set.
UTRGV had a chance to win the final set, going up 11-9 on a Knudsen kill, but Glavinic came up with two kills as Seattle U won four-straight serves to take the lead for good.
UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Grand Canyon at the UTRGV Fieldhouse during the annual BelieVe in a Cure match. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive BelieVe in a Cure rally towels. Additionally, pink BelieVe in a Cure t-shirts will be on sale for $10 with all of the proceeds benefiting breast cancer research. Doors open at 6.
