PHOENIX, Ariz. – Sophomore
Sarah Bonney converted a penalty kick with four seconds left in regulation, but the third-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team fell to host and sixth-seeded Grand Canyon University (GCU) 2-1 in overtime in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday at GCU Stadium.
Bonney got her opportunity following a tackle by
Kelsey Smith inside the box. Bonney shot into the lower left corner of the net to tie the match at 1.
McKenzie Cook scored the game-winning goal at 94:32 when she came up the right side of the pitch, got behind the defense, and shot diagonally into the back of the net.
Cook finished with two goals, as she also scored 4:23 into the match when she dribbled across the top of the box and shot the ball in the bottom left corner.
Bonney tried to respond just over one minute later, but
Blakely Fraasch (5-10-1) made the save.
Bonney attempted a team-high four shots, including three on goal.
Fraasch finished with four saves, all of which came in the first 30 minutes of the match. That includes stopping junior
Malia Irvine's shot following a corner kick in the 26
th minute and senior
Hanna Spets in the 30
th minute.
UTRGV (9-8-3) outshot GCU (6-12-2) 10-5, including 5-4 on goal.
Sophomore
Kinga Szemik (3-5-2) made two saves for UTRGV.
