Women's Basketball Defeats Trinity to Close Out Islanders Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team closed out the Islanders Classic with a 62-57 win over Trinity University (TX) on Saturday at the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
UTRGV (2-0) had four players in double-figures with sophomore Megan Johnson leading the way with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Idil Türk chipped in 14 points while graduate student Laura Van Tilburg and junior Krisynthia Sampson each added 12 points with Sampson also grabbing nine rebounds. 
 
Micah Weaver led the way for Trinity (0-2) as she scored 23 points. Abby Holland added 12 points with Mollie Hughes chipping in 11 points.
 
Türk got things going for UTRGV with a three-pointer as both teams went back-and-forth in the first quarter. Van Tilburg got UTRGV back on top with a layup that made it 9-8 lead with 1:42 left in the quarter. After Trinity got a layup from Kate Irvin, which extended their lead to 12-9, UTRGV got a layup from freshman Jameka Dowell and a three-pointer from Sampson that helped tie the game at 14 at the end of the first.
 
Trinity scored the first five points of the second quarter before UTRGV got on the board with a layup from Van Tilburg and then another three-pointer by Sampson tied the game at 19 with 7:58 left in the first half. Trinity then went on an 9-0 run before Johnson stopped the streak by hitting one of two free throws as Trinity took the 30-23 lead into halftime. 
 
Johnson started the third quarter with a jumper that cut into the Trinity lead at 30-25. Later in the quarter, a layup by Sampson got UTRGV within 36-34 with 4:35 left to play in the third but Trinity pushed their lead back to nine after a layup by Mollie Hughes that made it 43-34 with 2:54 left to play in the third. Van Tilburg closed out the quarter with a layup that got UTRGV within 45-41.
 
Türk knocked down a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter and then a few minutes later she knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 48-48. Van Tilburg gave UTRGV their first lead since the closing minutes of the first quarter with a pair of free throws with 5:20 left to play. After Trinity regained the lead with a three-pointer by Julia Ackerman, UTRGV went on a 6-0 run to take the 56-53 lead but Trinity answered with four-striaght points to take the 57-56 lead. 
 
Johnson knocked down a jumper with a minute to go regaining the lead for UTRGV at 58-57 before Turk sealed the win by knocking down four-straight free throws.
 
UTRGV will open up their home portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The first 200 fans will receive #BeatCorpus t-shirts. Gates open at 6 p.m.
