EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to UT Arlington (UTA) 86-65 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
In his first-career start, freshman
Greg Bowie led UTRGV (6-7) with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, and four assists. Senior
Nick Dixon scored 15 points with nine rebounds and three assists.
Kevin Hervey led UTA (8-3) with 30 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Kaelon Wilson scored 21 points with six rebounds and five assists.
Nathan Hawkins scored 16 points with three rebounds, four assists and two steals.
UTA scored the first 10 points of the game before Kimasa made a layup, senior
Mike Hoffman nailed a three and Dixon sunk a free throw to bring UTRGV within 10-6.
UTRGV got as close as four twice, including 14-10 on a Kimasa layup at the 9:07 mark, but UTA responded with a 12-5 run to go up 26-15.
UTA took its largest lead of the half at 37-24 on a Hawkins layup with 2:02 remaining.
UTRGV trailed 43-33 early in the second half when a Bowie three sparked a 9-2 run to bring UTRGV within 45-42 at the 15:42 mark.
UTA responded with a 16-5 run to go up 61-47 and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 12 p.m. at Oklahoma State.
