HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team closed out a three-game road trip with a 69-67 victory over Rice on Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Senior
Nick Dixon led UTRGV (4-6) with 19 points. Sophomore
Xavier McDaniel Jr. scored 13 points with seven rebounds. Senior
Dan Kimasa finished with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Malik Osborne led Rice (2-6) with 14 points and six rebounds.
Connor Cashaw scored 12 points with eight rebounds.
Robert Martin scored 11 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Bishop Mercy scored 10 points with four rebounds.
Rice lead 7-6 in the opening minutes before a Dixon jumper sparked an 8-0 run to put UTRGV up 14-7.
UTRGV pushed its lead to double-figures for the first time when a dunk by junior
Johnny Crnogorac made the score 21-10.
Rice scored the next 10 points to pull within one before a Kimasa layup put UTRGV up three. UTRGV extended the lead to 28-22 on three Dixon free throws at the 7:29 mark of the first half.
Rice regained the lead in the final minutes of the half on a
Dylan Jones layup that made the score 33-32.
Rice led by as many as six, going up 41-35 on a Mency three early in the second half. Kimasa responded with a three-point play as UTRGV went on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 43.
UTRGV took the lead on a three by junior
Lew Stallworth that made the score 51-48 with 13:55 remaining.
UTRGV went up by as many as 12 twice, including 66-54 on a McDaniel jumper at the 5:33 mark.
Rice answered with a 13-3 run to pull within two, but that's as close as Rice got.
UTRGV kicks off a three-game home stand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the UTRGV Fieldhouse as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive #BeatCorpus t-shirts. There will be a pregame rally in the courtyard starting when the doors open at 6.
