EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Utah Valley 88-68 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Antonio Green led UTRGV (10-20, 2-11 WAC) with 19 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers to regain the NCAA lead in three-pointers made with 110. Junior McAllen-native
Moe McDonald scored a career-high 18 points on a caeer-best 7-of-9 shooting, including a career-high tying 3-of-5 from behind the arc, with three assists.
Jordan Poydras led UVU (13-15, 5-8 WAC) with 17 points.
Zach Nelson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Ivory Young scored 13 points with five rebounds and four assists.
Conner Toolson scored 11 points with five rebounds.
Kenneth Ogbe also scored 11 points.
UTRGV and UVU traded baskets over the first four minutes, with freshman
Lesley Varner Jr. hitting three jumpers and McDonald adding one to keep the game tied at eight.
That's when Poydras went off, hitting a three, three free throws and a layup to power a 15-0 run to put UVU up 23-8.
UTRGV responded with an 11-2 run on the power of two McDonald three-pointers to pull within 25-19, but UVU scored the next nine points as part of a 12-2 run to push its lead into double-figures for the rest of the game.
UTRGV closes out the regular season on Saturday at 8 p.m. when it visits New Mexico State.
