Baseball Endures First Loss at No. 22 Houston

HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team endured its first loss of the season, 11-2 at No. 22 Houston on Tuesday at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

UTRGV (8-1) scored its furst run in the fifth when junior Anthony Gomez drew a leadoff walk and sophomore Conrad McMahon doubled him home to make it 10-1.

Then, in the eighth, UTRGV loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Tyler Torres followed with a fielder's choice to drive-in a run to make it 11-2.

Houston (6-2) started the scoring in the second, putting two on with two outs against graduate student Connor Grant (2-1) to set-up a Landon Etzel RBI-single to make it 1-0.

Then, in the third, Connor Wong drew a leadoff walked and scored on a triple by Grayson Padgett. Joe Davis followed with an RBI-single, and then after a Jake Scheiner double put runners at second and third, Lael Lockhart Jr. drove-in a run with an infield-single to knock out Grant. Senior Andrew Garcia came in and allowed doubles to Jared Triolo and Tyler Bielamowicz. Two outs later, Wong and Padgett hit home runs to cap the nine-run inning with the score 10-0.

Houston completed the scoring in the sixth on a Triolo home run.

UTRGV returns home on Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Lamar at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game that will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports channel 323. Gates open at 6.
