EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to UMKC 73-60 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Lew Stallworth led UTRGV (10-15, 2-6 WAC) with 16 points and six rebounds. Sophomore
Antonio Green scored seven points while hitting one three-pointer to raise his NCAA-leading total to 100.
Kyle Steward led UMKC (12-13, 4-4 WAC) with 20 points, 14 rebounds and four assists.
Broderick Newbill scored 12 points with five rebounds and two blocks.
LaVell Boyd scored 10 points with six assists.
Dashawn King also finished with 10 points.
UTRGV and UMKC traded baskets over the first seven minutes before a pair of baskets by freshman
Xavier McDaniel Jr. capped a 9-1 run to put UTRGV up 18-10.
UMKC followed with an 11-5 run to pull within 23-21, but UTRGV hit its next seven shots, including a trio of three-pointers, as part of a 17-3 run to go up 40-24 on a three by junior
Mike Nwabuzor with 1:45 remaining in the first half.
UTRGV still led by 16 at 43-26 after a dunk by junior
Adonis Rwabigwi, but
Broderick Robinson hit a three and Newbill made a layup to close the half and
Darnell Tillman started the second half with a layup as part of a 16-3 run to bring UMKC within 45-42.
Junior
Nick Dixon followed by making a layup and two free throws to push UTRGV's lead back out to seven.
UTRGV still had the lead with 9:20 remaining after a Stallworth free throw made it 55-53, but a Newbill layup tied the game, and a King layup gave UMKC the lead as part of a 10-0 run that extended into a 20-5 run to end the game.
UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. when it visits Grand Canyon.
