EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team snapped a five-game skid by beating Arlington Baptist 4-2 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV (11-7) put four runs on the board in the first inning by drawing four walks and coming up with a pair of infield singles to knock out
Erick Garcia after one-third of an inning. Three of the walks drove-in runs, as freshman
Tyler Torres and juniors
Cris Castillo and
Nick Schranck drew bases loaded walks. Junior
Noah Lee drove-in the other run with a single.
Brandon Ventura held UTRGV in check from there, pitching 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four while scattering four hits and three walks.
ABC (7-18) scratched across a run in the fourth on a wild pitch and another in the sixth on a bases loaded walk.
That was it against senior
Eddie Delgado (2-1), who pitched six innings of one-hit ball, striking out six.
Junior Harlingen South alum
Zach Martinez followed with two hitless innings before sophomore Brownsville Veterans alum
Luis Acosta struck out two in a perfect ninth for his third save.
UTRGV and Arlington Baptist complete this two-game set on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. It's Youth Group Night. The first 200 kids ages 13 and under will receive mini UTRGV foam fingers. Gates open at 6.
