EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team saw its season comes to a close with a 73-63 loss to Rice in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) Quarterfinals on Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
 
Senior Shawnte' Goff led UTRGV (19-14) with 14 points and four rebounds.
 
Goff finishes her career as the program record holder in points (1,912), field goals made (653) and attempted (1,860), three-pointers attempted (737), free throws made (385) and attempted (520), games played (127), minutes played (4,118) and wins (71). She ranks second in assists (338), third in steals (187) and three-pointers made (219), fourth in free throw shooting percentage (.740), and sixth in rebounds (530) and blocks (64).
 
Lauren Grigsby led Rice (20-13) with 24 points while going 6-for-9 from the field and 12-for-12 from the line. Jasmine Goodwine posted a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
 
UTRGV scored the first nine points of the game on a three-pointer by sophomore Nichelle Hyman and a three-point play and a three-pointer by Goff.
 
Rice scored its first six points on free throws while missing its first 10 shots. Goff and sophomore Tristan Murphy added jumpers to give UTRGV a 13-6 lead after eight minutes.
 
Goodwine hit a pair of layups to close the first as Rice went on a 27-9 run to go up 33-22 late in the second.
 
A Johnson layup and a pair of free throws by junior Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir brought UTRGV with seven.
 
UTRGV was still within single-digits at 36-27 on a Murphy layup and 40-31 on a three by junior Idil Türk before Goodwine hit a three to spark an 8-0 run to help Rice push the lead into double-figures until the final minute.
 
Rice took its largest lead at 23 points when a Grigsby layup made it 68-45 early in the fourth, but sophomore Weslaco alum Angela Villarreal hit a jumper and three free throws to start an 18-3 run that brought UTRGV within 71-63 with 44 seconds remaining.
