PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team picked up their first Western Athletic Conference win of the season after defeating Seattle University 5-2 on Saturday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
 
UTRGV (3-18, 1-1 WAC) got out to a quick lead after taking two of three doubles matches. Sophomore Yehonatan Kaufman and freshman Mateo Schmit picked up a 6-2 win over Arshak Ghazaryan and Matt Alderson on court one. Junior Koby Jansen and freshman Clément Sarradin got the other doubles win after defeating Trenton Nield and Adrian Sanabria 7-5 on court three.
 
In singles, UTRGV clinched the win with four wins. Jansen recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ghzaryan on court one. Kaufman went three sets with Nield on court two as he won the first 6-3 and then after falling 4-6 in the second, he picked up the win with a 6-2 win in the third.
 
Johnstone also posted a three set win over Michael Schoettler on court four. He opened with a 6-3 win in the first set before falling 3-6 in the second. He notched a 6-3 win in the third set to clinch the win.
 
Sarradin swept through his sets against John Stormans on court four, as he didn't drop a game winning 6-0, 6-0.
 
Seattle U (9-10, 0-1 WAC) got wins on courts five and six to get on the board against UTRGV.  
 
UTRGV will be back in action on March 31 when they return to the Orville Cox Tennis Center to host Laredo Community College at 1 p.m.
