FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team fell at No. 3 Texas Christian University (TCU) 18-2 in seven innings on Wednesday at Lupton Field.
UTRGV (16-13) struck immediately, as with two outs in the first, senior
Austin Siener walked and senior
Joseph Collazo singled to set-up run-scoring singles by freshman La Joya alum
Anibal Leal and senior
Victor Garcia Jr. to make it 2-0.
TCU (19-5) responded with 11 runs in the second inning.
Mason Hesse and
Zach Humphreys opened the scoring with bases loaded walks.
Austen Wade groudned out to score a run and then
Cam Warner hit a two-run double. Three batters later, with the bases reloaded,
Nolan Brown hit a sacrifice fly and then, after a hit batsman ended senior
Eddie Delgado's (2-2) night, Hesse capped the inning with a grand slam.
TCU added a run in the third on a
Josh Watson RBI-double, four in the fourth on two-run home runs by Humphreys and
Evan Skoug, and two in the sixth on a Watson double.
That made a winner of
Austin Boyles (1-0), who pitched 3.2 innings of one-hit relief, striking out six while walking one.
UTRGV resumes Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 8 p.m. when it opens up a three-game series at CSU Bakersfield.
