CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team closed out the H-E-B Tournament of Champions with a 2-4 loss to the University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday.
 
Singles matches were played first and with the match clinched doubles were not played.
 
UTRGV (2-13) jumped out to the early lead as they won the first two matches of the day. Junoir Koby Jansen won straight sets over Kai Breitbach on court one giving them the 1-0 lead.
 
Junior Elliot Johstone followed that up with a hard fought three-set victory over Juri Reckow on court two. Johnstone opened with a 6-3 win in the first set before falling 1-6 in the second. The third set was a tight one that went to a tiebreaker as Johnstone won the set 7-6 extending UTRGV's lead to 2-0.
 
UTSA (3-9) won the next four singles matches to clinch the match.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union at 3 p.m.
