CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team closes out the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Saturday when they face the University of Texas San Antonio.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (2-12) dropped a pair of matches on Friday as they fell 0-4 to South Alabama and 3-4 to DePaul.
After being swept by South Alabama in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions, UTRGV found itself in a hard fought match against DePaul.
Singles matches were played first as both teams recorded three wins each.
Koby Jansen,
Yehonatan Kaufman and Clément Sarradin each posted singles victories.
With the match tied at three, UTRGV got the doubles matches started with a win as
Elliot Johnstone and
Andres Hernandez defeated Tamas Zador and Boris Spanjaard 6-1 on court two. DePaul went on to win on courts one and three to clinch the point and the match.
Scouting UTSA
UTSA is 2-9 on the season with one of those wins coming over UTRGV back on January 29 in San Antonio.
Their other win came over Prairie View A&M in their second match of the season.
UTSA has a pair of student-athletes with three singles victories on the season with Axel Cronje posting a 3-6 record while Takeru Watanabe has posted a 3-3 record.
As a team, UTSA is 15-30 in their singles matches while going 7-16 in their doubles matches.
In doubles the duo of Fabian Brand and Igor Cantanhede lead the way with a 4-3 record. Christian Carrillo and Juri Reckow have posted a pair of victories on the season while Watanabe and Leon Hein have record one win.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 23-30 against UTSA all-time in a series that dates back to 1982.
These two teams met earlier this year as UTSA came away with the 6-1 victory in San Antonio.
The last time UTRGV beat UTSA was last year at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on Tuesday when they head back to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
