Men’s Tennis Starts Final Conference Weekend With Chicago State Friday

SEATTLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team kicks off their final Western Athletic Conference cluster when they face Chicago State University on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (4-18, 1-1 WAC) won their second straight match after defeating Laredo Community College, who is ranked sixth in the ITA junior college rankings, 5-2 on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
In doubles, Koby Jansen and Clement Sarradin picked up a 6-3 win over Jason Roberts and Myrohn Miranda on court three. UTRGV clinched the point as Yehonatan Kaufman and Mateo Schmit won 7-6 over Juan Cruz Scoppetta and Victor Bravo on court one.
 
In singles, UTRGV won on four singles courts as Jansen, Kaufman, Sarradin and Schmit all won their matches to clinch the win.
 
Scouting Chicago State
Chicago State is 6-11 on the season and 1-1 in conference play and they are coming off of an 0-7 loss to Grand Canyon back on March 26.
 
They opened up conference play with a 0-7 loss to New Mexico State on March 25 with their last win coming against Eastern Illinois on March 4.
 
Christian Gonzalez leads Chicago State with an 8-8 record while playing in the No. 4 and 5 spots this season. Gonzalo Martinez and Felix Savard have posted six singles victories each.
 
In doubles, the team of Martinez and Gonzalez have posted an 8-7 record as a team this season. They are 6-1 at the No. 2 spot while going 2-6 at the No. 1 spot. As a team, Chicago State is 19-26 in doubles.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 2-0 against Chicago State in a series that dates back to 2015.
 
Both of these teams met last year where UTRGV came away with the 6-1 win in Kansas City.

UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday when they face Grand Canyon University at 6 p.m. in Seattle, Washington.
