EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 3-1 victory over Prairie View A&M as part of the UTRGV Tournament at the at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Senior
Andreya Barrera scored the match's first goal midway through the first half when she drew out goalkeeper
Clarissa Ledesma (0-1-0), beat her to the left, and fired on the open net.
Ten minutes later, sophomore
Mackenzie McLeod sent a long pass from the midfield to the right side of the box. Freshman McAllen high alum
Anna Hover received the ball, moved left, and then switched right before finding the lower right-hand corner of the net to put UTRGV up 2-0.
Junior
Tuva Rolstad Nilsen added her first career goal at 82:35 off a corner kick by Hover to make it 3-0.
Prairie View A&M (0-1-0) scored its lone goal less than a minute later on a long shot by
Paiton Maples.
That was it against Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzlaez (1-0-0), who made one save.
UTRGV (1-0-0) outshot Prairie View A&M 19-6, including 10-2 on goal.
UTRGV wraps up the tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Sam Houston State. CSU Bakersfield plays Prairie View A&M in the first match of the day at 11 a.m.
Fans will receive one free ticket to every Sunday home soccer match with the purchase of a ticket of equal or greater value, courtesy of
Plaza Sports.
UTRGV will also be continuing its School Supplies Drive. Any fans donating five new, unopened school supplies items will receive a free ticket. Current UTRGV students, who already receive free admission, will receive a free concession stand item.

Glue sticks
All donations benefit the Rainbow Room, a resource center that provides emergency supplies to children and families served by Child Protective Services in Hidalgo County.
