EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team won the UTRGV Tournament Championship by beating Sam Houston State University (SHSU) 2-1 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Junior
Diandra Aliaga scored both of UTRGV's (2-0-0) goals. The first strike came at 3:53, when senior
Hanna Spets sent a pass ahead to freshman
Gina Steiner, who touched the ball to Aliaga on her left. Aliaga fired into the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
Eleven minutes later, junior
Malia Irvine sent a pass ahead to sophomore
Sarah Bonney, who crossed the ball to Aliaga, setting up the second goal.
Beryl Smith scored SHSU's (1-1-0) lone goal at 65:51 by stealing the ball and lobbing it over sophomore
Kinga Szemik (1-0-0), who finished with two saves.
SHSU goalkeeper
Christina Hendershot (1-1-0) made six saves.
UTRGV outshot SHSU 14-7, including 8-3 on net.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the opening event of the 2017-18 South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
