EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to Loyola Marymount University (LMU) 1-3 (16-25, 25-21, 19-25, 21-25) to close out the Oregon Classic on Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena.
 
Junior Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV (2-4) with 13 kills. Senior Bojana Mitrovic posted her second-straight double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Barbara Silva recorded eight kills and a career-high 12 digs. Junior Alexandra Ecker had eight kills with a team-high five blocks. Freshman Veronika Jandova finished with seven kills on .385 hitting.
 
Savannah Slattery led LMU (3-3) with 16 kills and 12 digs. Megan Rice recorded 15 kills on .324 hitting. Sara Kovac recorded 12 kills on .375 hitting. Emma Johnson finished with eight kills on .556 hitting and seven blocks.
 
After dropping the first set, UTRGV got locked in a back-and-forth second set with LMU. UTRGV and LMU combined to score back-to-back points just five times over the first 26 serves. With the set tied at 13, though Jandova and Silva came up with kills as UTRGV scored three in a row to take the lead. Then, with UTRGV's lead cut to 17-16, UTRGV took advantage of three errors and a Knudsen kill to go up 21-16. LMU scored the next two to pull within three, but kills by Silva, Jandova and Knudsen helped UTRGV put the set away.
 
UTRGV led for much of the third set, going up 14-10 on an error. UTRGV still led at 15-13 on a Knudsen kill before LMU won the next four serves to take the lead. UTRGV tied the set at 18 on a Mitrovic kill, but LMU won six-straight serves to put the set away.
 
The fourth set was tight throughout, with UTRGV taking its largest lead at 13-11 on a Jandova kill. UTRGV again led by two at 20-18 on a Knudsen kill, but LMU scored seven of the final eight points to end the match.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi for the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
