EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team closed out the Rio Grande Valley Invitational with a 1-0 loss to No. 21 Omaha on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Sophomores
Michael Faber and
Angel Lopez earned All-Tournament Team honors. Faber anchored a UTRGV (0-1-1) defense that allowed just two goals in 200 minutes across two matches, keeping St. Bonaventure and Omaha (4-0-0) to a combined six shots on goal. Lopez controlled the pace of play in the midfield while attempting five shots (three on goal).
Omaha outshot UTRGV 3-0 over the first 56:12, but UTRGV controlled the tempo for the rest of the match, outshooting Omaha 10-0.
Sophomore
Juanito Ramirez led the way with three shots (one on goal). Sophomores
Ilias Kosmidis and
Arthur Rogers attempted two shots each. Senior Brownsville Hanna alum
Carlos Acevedeo attempted UTRGV's other shot on goal.
Joseph Ghitis (5-0-0), the defensive MVP of the tournament, finished with two saves, but was forced to come out of the net and play aggressively on multiple occasions over the final 32 minutes.
Emmanuel Hamzat scored the game-winning goal in the sixth minute after passes from
Ethan Bowman and
Xavier Gomez.
Sophomore
Andy Rios (0-1-1) finished with one save.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. against Loyola-Chicago in the first match of NIU Adidas Invitational.
